The youthXchange kit

The teacher conducting the various teaching sessions can supplement the discussions taking place in class with the help of the youthXchange kit published jointly by UNEP and UNESCO.

Responsible consumption

The concepts of responsible consumption, citizenship and environmental conscience will no longer hold any secrets for any children taking part in the 2006 campaign

Young people represent a significant group in our consumer societies. The habits they acquire today will play a vital role in the way they consume tomorrow. The purpose of the youthXchange kit is to change the wasteful way in which we consume into one more suitable for our sustainable development.

The kit presents responsible consumption as one of the aspects of sustainable development. It is based on simple and cogent information and makes it possible for even the youngest person to understand how each of us can act on our own level.

Quotations from the kit:

« It has been estimated that if the rest of the world continued to consume like the developed world does, we would need the equivalent of 4 extra Earth."

« Every day, 50 plant species become extinct. (...) Scientifics believe that plants hold the key to finding cures for many diseases. So, each lost species (...) is a lost for opportunity for our future development".

« The wealth of world's 225 richest individuals equals the annual incomes of the bottom 47% of the world's population, or 2.5 billion people".
