Primary school children, aged between 9 and 11 years old, designed their "streamers"—flags symbolizing environmental protection—and wrote a short text explaining the thinking behind it. The winning streamers from each country were then printed as real streamers on flag fabric.
Fluttering in the breeze on June 5, World Environment Day, the winning streamers from participating countries were exhibited in the Luxembourg Garden in Paris and in many other countries.
The official prize-giving ceremony took place at the French Senate on May 31, in the presence of Christian Poncelet, President of the Senate; Mrs. André, Vice President of the Senate; Jean Audouze, Vice President of the French national Commission for UNESCO; and Henri Proglio, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Veolia Environnement.
