The people now living on the earth are using more natural resources than all previous generations. And let's not forget the serious imbalance these days: 20% of the world's population uses 80% of the planet's resources!
What is sustainable development?
The world's population doesn't stop growing, and we always want more of everything. Everyone has the right to a proper standard of living, and yet the Earth's resources are limited.
What can we do?
What is sustainable development ?
It's "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
According to the concept, everybody is responsible for the planet and for the well being of all of its people. Since everything we do has an impact, everybody can do something!
Three key words
In order to be sustainable, an activity must:
- promote equality and solidarity between people. How can we accept that millions of people live without access to essential services such as safe drinking water and water treatment, health and education?
- allow economic development, allow commercial trade or traditional exchanges between countries or regions, and encourage people to create activities that allow them to gain a livelihood.
- protect the environment. Activities that over-exploit the limited natural resources of the planet, or that threaten the fragile balance between people and nature, simply cannot be sustainable!
