Things you can do

Human activities (industry, agriculture, transport, lifestyles, etc) have a substantial impact on the quality of environment.
Merely implementing innovative techniques to reduce pollution is not enough.

Our behaviour and way of life are determining factors for protection of the environment and health.

By individuals and groups adopting more environmentally-friendly behaviour in their daily lives (using public transport, food consumption, reducing waste, etc.) we can act upstream to protect our children's health and our own.

By changing our modes of consumption and life styles, we can substantially reduce our impact on the environment and thus help improve public health.

For example, using public transport in towns and cities would mean car emissions (nitrogen oxide, diesel particles, ozone, etc) would be reduced that cause certain respiratory illnesses in children, such as asthma attacks, bronchitis, etc.

Healthy children grow into strong and healthy adults

Children must be made aware when they are very young of the need to protect the environment and their health.

Our children are directly affected by aggressive agents in the environment (diarrhoea, bronchitis type problems, etc) and so they should understand the links between pollution and their health.

So they must be made aware when they are very young of the need to protect the environment and their health so that they will better control the impact of their behaviour on their quality of life.

As adults, we are responsible for providing healthy living conditions for our children in order to protect their health.

There are advantages to be gained in the long term from our commitments to the environment and health for society as a whole (more preventative health care and lower social service needs, greater productivity, etc).

The quality of the environment for children is at the very heart of sustainable development.
