A scroll around the world

The event

A ceremony to celebrate the "Scroll around the World" campaign was held in the morning in the Town Hall, headquarters of the southern province where Noumea, the capital of New Caledonia, is located.

Two schools were selected in collaboration with education department authorities in the southern province. They are "Les Jacarandes" in the Greater Noumea region and "Candide Koch" in Noumea itself.

This choice was motivated by the two schools' particular commitment to and interest in the environment, which is an integral part of their school programme this year, and will be crowned by their participation in the "Scroll around the World" campaign.

The selected young artists drew a message focusing on waste and transport onto the "Scroll". The main emphasis was on locally prevalent diseases -dengue and leptospirosis- of particular concern to the authorities in this cyclone season.

An exhibition was set up to display all the drawings done by all the children.

Since 1988, Onyx has held the sanitation concession for the City of Noumea (waste collection, management and treatment in landfill sites, road and beach cleaning, felling operations in green spaces). It also handles sanitation and waste collection in towns in Greater Noumea and the bush.
It is currently setting up a selective waste treatment system.

Onyx is involved in programmes to educate people about environmental and health issues and possible recycling solutions within New Caledonia.
Through its sponsorship of the CIE (Environmental Initiation Centre), some thirty events on the theme of waste are organised in schools and social and health service centres every year. Particular efforts are made to inform the population about the health risks (dengue and leptospirosis) associated with waste.

Since 2002, Connex has been providing suburban public transport in Greater Noumea (Mont-Doré, Dumbéa and Païta) through the company "Carsud".
