The event
The scroll event was hosted by Veolia Environnement in Portugal on May 31, the day before The Childhood Day and just before World Envrionment Day.
When the project was first presented, municipalities replied with enthusiasm and agreed to participate. The challenge was for each Municipality to select one class. In the end, 180 children were invited!
Children and offcial guests spent the day at the Santa Iria de Azóia Urban Park in Loures.
The park, which boasts magnificent views across the Tagus estuary and features leisure equipment and an Environmental Education Center, was built on an old landfill site in a project that broke new ground in Portugal.
M. Jocelyn Gourlet , Veolia Water Portugal managing director, welcomed the group and launched the day. After the picnic, children participated in various environment-related games and activities run by the specialized guides from the park while the selected children were busy drawingtheir messages on the scroll
Around 4pm, the artists had completed their work, next to the 19 previous drawings from countries around the world and Portugal had taken its place on the international scroll.
