The events
Veolia Water Thailand and its partnerships Company, GUSCO together with the support of the Bumphen Nuew Buddhist School and the Bang Chan Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand, welcomed the scroll with honour in Thailand within the Bang Chan Industrial Estate area (one of the 12 Industrial Estates for which GUSCO manages their environmental utility services).
Beside the local representatives, it was a great pleasure to have distinguished guests including:
- Ms. Anchalee Chavanich, the Governor of Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand;
- Police Representative Major General Chalee Vetcharatpimon;
- Mr. Hasdin Pinprachasan, Chief of Municipality;
- Dr. Laeiat Jamjun, Director of the Nopparat Vatchira Hospital,
- Mr. Hasanand Napasab, Director of S. Napa Veolia,
- Mr. Suriya Suptanasinkasem
- and Mr. David Cox, Regional Director of Veolia Water South East Asia.
Thirty local Bangchan children officially launched the event at 9:00 am.
For the actual Scroll painting, five selected children worked very hard for two and a half hour on the scroll while the others enjoyed participating in entertaining games such as quizzes on environmental subjects and the Veolia Water Box of Experiments.
At 10:30 am, the official guests started to arrive.
They were invited to visit Veolia Water "Environment and Health day" exposition at the entrance and then a presentation on the local international activities of Veolia and the concept of the "Scroll around the World".
Afterwards, over sixty VIPs shared a lunch followed by the most exciting moment of the day: the display of the Scroll showing all the drawings and for the first time, the work of the Thai children. A friendly interview was carried with the children giving them the opportunity to express their thoughts and imagination about the city of their dream:
The comments on the painting included:
- Many bins are in the city of our dream because children like to keep the city clean by recycling waste in colorful bins. But adults don't have to forget to help us as well.
- In the city of our dreams, people don't get sick easily. It's a good thing to have a hospital on the hills, so people in the mountains who get sick can be cured on time.
- Our sky train reduces the traffic and gives us more recreation areas to play football.
- In the city of our dream, we are proud to live happily with people in three different religions: Buddhism, Muslim and Christian.
For the future and based on the success of this project, Veolia Water Thailand and GUSCO plan to organise a similar event throughout the 12 GUSCO industrial sites involving local schools.
The painting highlights the future Bangkok City of the Children's dream including:
- The Bangkok Sky Train to reduce traffic congestion
- Recreational areas for sports
- School for education
- Hospitals for health
- Housing for all residents
- Clean air
- Clean rivers and sea
- Recycling Bins
- Religions harmony
- Green areas and park
Taking the opportunity of the Scroll around the World project, Veolia Water Thailand organized an Environment and Health Day on Monday 22nd March 2004 in a Buddhist School of the Bang Chan Industrial Estate in the suburb of Bangkok.
This special day gathered 600 children aged 6 to 12 years around different activities in order to make them in aware of the importance of caring for the environment and our health.
Children played several clever games. The most successful one was based on the three standard recycling bins used in Thailand which are in three different colours. This allowed to explain how to recycle the waste correctly. Children had to select the right recycling bin for the type of rubbish shown on a picture.
Another successful activity was the drawing competition which was meant to select the winning team of 5 children who will draw on the Scroll the City of our Dream.
