A Scroll Around the World at La Maison de l'UNESCO

Exhibit of children's drawings collected during the international campaign to build awareness of health and the environment, conducted by Veolia Environnement

Last April, Veolia Environnement organized the operation A Scroll Around the World. This single scroll of rice paper, 25 metres long, went on a two-and-a-half-month tour through 17 countries on five continents to collect children's drawings on the environment and health.
This international campaign conducted by Veolia Environnement, was built around the theme, Living well in your citycollecting your hints.

Beautiful messages of hope in this holiday season.

The principle of the operation was as follows. In each of the 24 city stops along the tour, children reflected on the environmental problems of their own city and how these were linked to their own day-to-day health concerns. Whereupon they drew personal messages on the big scroll.

Through their drawings, the children showed that they were able to identify the causes of degradation of environmental quality and that they recognize the need to improve the quality of life in cities. They are also aware of the simple things they can do to contribute to well-being in day-to-day living.

As a group, children mentioned the need to keep their city clean, problems with air pollution from cars and factories, the quality of water in the sea and rivers, the need to conserve energy and be able to turn to renewable energies, and nature conservancy. A new awareness reinforced by supporting actions addressing what the children intend to do and what they recommend for their city and their day-to-day living environment.

It's important to conserve nature and not to throw litter and garbage in the streets. Children need to be aware of this reality, explains a student from Rabat, Morocco.

As they admire the works of the Scroll at La Maison de l'UNESCO, children who live in or are visiting Paris will be able to share the thoughts of children from the four corners of the world.
Oftentimes, they will recognize their own concerns and thus become aware of the international scope of environmental concerns.
Beautiful messages of hope in this holiday season.

The event

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is hosting this exhibit because the approach of the Scroll matches the objectives of the Organization, which aims to encourage reflection and action for the environment and sustainable development and to stimulate school curricula in this direction throughout the world.
